KINDERGARTEN AND ELEMENTARY

A FRENCH EDUCATION TO YOUR CHILD !

In the French education system, primary school is composed of Kindergarten (école maternelle) and Elementary school (école élémentaire). Teaching is organised by cycles:

  1. The cycle of first learnings, covering Kindergarten classes until Grande Section (GS) included.
  2. The cycle of fundamental learnings, from Cours Préparatoire (CP) to the 2nd year of Elementary class (Cours Elémentaires CE2)
  3. The cycle of Advancements, from 1 year of Cours Moyen (CM1) to Sixième (Secondary school – Collège).

Children are expected to stay all day, however the younger ones may come only in the morning to begin with. If it is the first time at school for the child, parents are welcome until 9am to give support.

From October, children will have to be left at the class entrance so they can build their independence and learn their limits. Kindergarten helps the children to progress from their family setting to the school setting. This progression is facilitated by the competence of teachers and the way the class is managed. The class schedule respects the children’s biorhythm and the younger ones are allowed to nap.

In Kindergarten, the children build the basis of the skills necessary to learning through 5 themes for the activities:

  • Language in learning
  • Living together
  • Expression with the body
  • Sensitivity, imagination creativity
  • Discovering the world

The child will then start to acquire cross-disciplinary skills:

  • Attention
  • Methods
  • Organisation
  • Memorisation

By the end of Kindergarten, the child will know in French and in English how to:

  • Communicate collectively by waiting for his turn to speak
  • Describe a situation or an action, and make a puppet speak
  • Understand, remember and invent stories, sing children songs
  • Understand what the different writing mediums are for (books, screen, panel, newspaper, etc.)
  • Speak and tell by mastering and structuring his language
  • Understand the rhythmic and sonorous qualities of his language, and produces rhymes and assonances
  • Write his name, copy words and hold a pen properly

In these classes the child will be processing from speech to writing. The education will be organised in the form of themed activities instead of disciplinary fields, bringing a greater fluidity in these important transitions.

The proportion of spoken versus written will invert. It will mainly be learning and mastery of the language, the writing, the basics of mathematics. Knowledge of the world and Arts are not forgotten, as well as physical education that also helps with socialisation.

At the end of the second cycle, the child will have:

  • improved its mastery of the spoken language
  • learned to read, to write, acquired the basics of grammar and spelling
  • started to feel responsible and to socialise
  • learned the basics of calculus and small problem solving
  • discovered the notions of space and the basics of geometry
  • learned measures and units and their practical use
  • learned to locate himself and find his way in time and space
  • used and understood simple physics instruments
  • used computers and the Internet
  • started to draw, sing in tune, and played individual and collective sports

These last 3 levels are for going into detail. Most of the skills and knowledge have already been acquired. The school will now help acquire or perfect their intellectual know-how, increase their hunger for knowledge and improve their respect for others. All these will help them fully benefit from their Secondary education.

Classes are now organised by subjects as they will be for the rest of their education. Language mastery is of up most priority. For this, International French School of Kathmandu has planned individual tutoring. Another important subject is the civic education and life in collectivity. The other teachings are divided up in 4 domains: literacy and human education, science education, arts education, and physical education.

All of the skills acquired by the end of the 3rd cycle are too numerous to list; however in each subject, the student will have to:

  • know how to express themselves, deliver their opinion, understand and respect the opinion of others
  • read and write
  • know how to do research on a subject with books, dictionaries, and the Internet
  • know the great moments of world and French history
  • know how to do research in an atlas and have acquired the basics in political, economical and physical geography
  • know the basics of mathematics and geometry required for Secondary education
  • have experimented with simple science instruments, know the basics of living things, energy, and be sensitive to the environment and have begun with software engineering
  • have gained consciousness of the visual and musical arts and experienced their basics
  • have participated in different sports, and have adapted to collective sports
